The definition of the Organic Search channel in GA4 states that:
☑ Source matches a list of search sites listed under “SOURCE_CATEGORY_SEARCH”
👉 AND
☑ Medium exactly matches organic
So 2 conditions are required for the session to be attributed to that channel.
In the comments of a previous post of mine, a user attached a screenshot in which a session with source “google” and medium “(not set)” was associated with the channel Organic Search… 🤔
Amazed by this inconsistency, I carried out some tests and discovered that not only “google / (not set)” is associated with the Organic Search channel, but also:
😱 bing / (not set) –> Organic Search
😱 (not set) / organic –> Organic Search
😱 appsscript.it / organic –> Organic Search
😱 google / referral –> Organic Search
😱 google / test123 –> Organic Search
Check out the screenshot below!
🐞 What do you think? Is this a bug or is there a different explanation?
